One Day Visit to Chimp Island
Availability : February 2024 to February 2026
Uganda Wildlife Education Center, Entebbe
Ngamba Chimp Island, Lake Victoria
Min Age : 5+
Care taker, Alan Mugerwa, is photographed with female chimp, Nnaku, in the forest at the Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary in Lake Victoria, Uganda. Nnaku means ‘sorrows’ in Luganda because she arrived after Ngamba Island had lost another chimpanzee named Yiki to pneumonia and also because the island was sad to receive yet another orphan. Nakuu was being held by a man in Kampala who had brought her from DR. C. After reading an article about chimpanzees and the law pertaining to them, he handed her over to the authorities. Nnaku quickly settled in with the juveniles but retains her close bond with Nani, with whom she spent five months within quarantine. She is very low ranking in the group; Rutoto, Rambo and Kikyo usually tease her. Photo by: Julia Cumes/IFAW

Mid-Morning:

At approximately 10:00 am, we hop aboard a boat from the UWEC jetty and head to Ngamba Chimp Island, which is about 23 km away. The boat ride takes anywhere between 45 minutes to an hour and offers scenic views of Lake Victoria and its islands.
Upon arrival at Ngamba Chimp Island, you will be welcomed by the staff and given a brief orientation about the sanctuary and its history. You will also learn about the chimpanzees’ personalities, habits, and challenges.
You will have the opportunity to watch the first feeding session of the day, where the chimpanzees come to the edge of the forest to receive fruits and vegetables from the caregivers. You can observe their interactions and behaviors from a raised platform and take photos and videos as well.

At 1:30 pm, you will have another chance to watch the second feeding session of the day, where you can see more chimpanzees coming out of the forest. You can also ask questions to the caregivers and learn more about their work and challenges.
At 2:30 pm we say our goodbyes to Mankind’s closest cousin as you board the boat back to Entebbe, where you can enjoy the views of Lake Victoria again. You will arrive at UWEC jetty around 3:20 pm.
