Kibale is dubbed the ‘Primate Capital of the World’ and rightfully so. The verdant forest hosts the highest population of wild chimpanzees in East Africa, estimated at 1,200 individuals. As you pursue chimps here, you are also likely to encounter 12 other primate species. During this trip, you will also explore truly awe-inspiring crater lakes, tea plantations and mingle with local communities. This safari of a lifetime also takes you to the centre of medicinal herbs.
Entebbe International Airport, Uganda
Pickup on arrival at Entebbe International Airport
Upon arrival at Entebbe International Airport, your assigned guide will welcome you and brief you about your tour (this shall be a good opportunity to personalize your itinerary & travel plan before the Safari commences) and transfer you to your boutique hotel in Entebbe for your overnight stay, kick back and relax this night as you prepare for your safari that kicks off the following day.
After breakfast, embark on a 4-hour road trip towards Fort Portal in western Uganda. The highway is well paved/tarmacked with captivating views of rolling hills, tea plantations, banana plantations, tropical forests and traditional Ugandan villages. To make the trip less exhausting, there will be at least two stopovers at points where you can refresh and grab something to eat/drink.
Upon arrival, you will check into Primate Lodge Kibale, one of the few lodges in the park where wildlife makes surprise but safe visits. This mostly happens as animals cross over from one side of the forest to the other in search for food. The lodge boasts of eco-friendly cottages, each of which is tucked in a quiet part of the jungle. There is even a treehouse deep in the jungle if you wish to secure a front row seat to the wildlife drama. Dinner will be served at a fireplace in front of the lodge.
After breakfast, you will be taken to the starting point of chimpanzee trekking where you will meet with a ranger/guide to take you through the DOs and DON’Ts of chimpanzee trekking. Thereafter, the guide will usher you into the forest for 2-4 hours searching for chimpanzees, starting at the spot where they nested the previous night. Chimps make their nests in the canopy, occasionally coming down to the floor during the day to bond with each other. Kibale is a relatively flat terrain hence the trek is doable even for people with walking difficulties. Once through with the trek, you will return to your lodge for a lunch break. In the late afternoon, you will embark on a nature walk in the well-conserved community-owned Bigodi Wetland. Bigodi has a thriving population of bird species like the green-breasted pitta and great blue turaco.
At no point will you feel bored as you will be engaged in every part of the tour.
After breakfast, you will pursue a 2-hour tour of stunningly beautiful crater lakes, just outside the forest. Get your camera out as there are so many picturesque scenes to capture. Once through, you will be driven back to Entebbe and dropped off at the airport in time to check-in for your flight back home.
