Stone Town is the old part of Zanzibar City, the main city of Zanzibar, in Tanzania. The newer portion of the city is known as Ng’ambo, Swahili for ‘the other side’. Stone Town is located on the western coast of Unguja, the main island of the Zanzibar Archipelago. Former capital of the Zanzibar Sultanate, and flourishing centre of the spice trade as well as the slave trade in the 19th century, it retained its importance as the main city of Zanzibar during the period of the British protectorate.
When Tanganyika and Zanzibar joined each other to form the United Republic of Tanzania, Zanzibar kept a semi-autonomous status, with Stone Town as its local government seat. Stone Town is a city of prominent historical and artistic importance in East Africa. Its architecture, mostly dating back to the 19th century, reflects the diverse influences underlying the Swahili culture, giving a unique mixture of
Arab, Persian, Indian and European elements. For this reason, the town was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000. Due to its heritage, Stone Town is also a major visitor attraction in Tanzania, and a large part of its economy depends on tourism-related activities. Historical tour around capital city of Zanzibar to discover slave trade story, curved doors and cosmopolitans of Zanzibar.
Before Zanzibar was called the spice island due to the presence of different varieties of spices, in those days we were giant producers of coconut and cloves, Zanzibar was number one producer of cloves in Africa, in 1973 we had a hurricane and that destroyed cloves plantations especially in Unguja island. Apart from cloves we have cinnamon, cardamom, nutmeg, vanilla etc.
At the heart of Zanzibar island we have a different private spice farms but also the government spice plantation at Kizimbani village, at this village our guide will walk through around the farm to give you a tour such that you can see, touch and smell different varieties of spice, our guide will have assistance
who will assist him by climbing trees so as to give you an opportunity to see how we harvest and also at spice farm we have a different tropical fruits like mangoes, passion fruit, jackfruit, doriani, mandarin etc.
This is a very tiny sandbank where tourists go for picnic, it can be seen during low water tide and disappear at a high-water tide, it’s very nice for swimming and snorkelling , and it located 5km from stone town and 7km from prison island, in this picnic we will provide almost all seafood that we have here in Zanzibar, our cook will be there to show you how we cook the seafood to make it taste yummy. After enjoying Swahili cooking, you shall be transfered back to the mainland via a ferry and then driven to Julius Nyerere International Airport for flight back home.
