Safari in the Pearl of Africa

Uganda is a landlocked country in East Africa known for its diverse and scenic landscapes, rich culture and history, and abundant wildlife. Uganda is often called the “Pearl of Africa” as a testament to its natural beauty and variety of attractions. One of the most popular and thrilling activities that visitors can enjoy in Uganda is a game drive, which is a safari adventure that takes you through the savannah parks in a four-wheel drive vehicle, guided by an expert local guide, to see and learn about the wild animals that live there.

Uganda has four main savannah parks where game drives are conducted: Kidepo Valley National Park, Murchison Falls National Park, Queen Elizabeth National Park, and Lake Mburo National Park. Each park has its own unique features and attractions, and offers a different game viewing experience. Here is a brief overview of each park and what you can expect to see on a game drive there:

– Kidepo Valley National Park: This is the most remote and least visited park in Uganda, located in the northeastern corner of the country, bordering South Sudan and Kenya. It is also one of the most beautiful and pristine parks, with stunning scenery of rugged mountains, rolling plains, and verdant valleys. Kidepo Valley National Park is home to over 80 mammal species, some of which are endemic or rare, such as the cheetah, the striped hyena, the aardwolf, and the Burchell’s zebra. It is also one of the best places to see large predators, such as lions, leopards, and spotted hyenas. Other animals that you can see on a game drive in Kidepo include elephants, buffaloes, giraffes, antelopes, and ostriches.

– Murchison Falls National Park: This is the largest and oldest park in Uganda, located in the northwestern part of the country, along the Nile River. It is famous for its spectacular waterfall, where the Nile squeezes through a narrow gorge and plunges 43 meters into a pool below, creating a thunderous roar and a rainbow mist. Murchison Falls National Park is also a great destination for game drives, as it has a diverse and abundant wildlife population, including the Big Five (lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and rhino). The park also has other attractions, such as the Nile delta, where the river flows into Lake Albert, creating a rich ecosystem of papyrus swamps, grasslands, and forests. This is another prime location for the shoebill stork, as well as other animals, such as hippos, crocodiles, and waterbirds. The best way to see the wildlife in Murchison Falls National Park is by a combination of game drives, boat cruises, and walking safaris.

– Queen Elizabeth National Park: This is the most visited and popular park in Uganda, located in the southwestern part of the country, near the Rwenzori Mountains and the Kazinga Channel. It is a park of contrasts, with diverse habitats ranging from savannahs and wetlands to forests and volcanic craters. Queen Elizabeth National Park is known for its high concentration and variety of wildlife, especially the tree-climbing lions, which can be found in the Ishasha sector of the park, resting on the branches of fig trees. Other animals that you can see on a game drive in Queen Elizabeth National Park include elephants, buffaloes, Uganda kobs, warthogs, giant forest hogs, leopards, hyenas, and mongooses. The park also has a rich birdlife, with over 600 species recorded, including the rare and beautiful flamingos, which can be seen in the salt lakes of the park.

– Lake Mburo National Park: This park is perfect for Plains game safaris and is the closest park to Kampala, the capital city of Uganda, located in the central region of the country. It is also the only park in Uganda where you can see the impala, a graceful and elegant antelope. Lake Mburo National Park is a gem of a park, with scenic landscapes of rolling hills, acacia woodlands, and grassy valleys. The park is named after the largest of the five lakes within its boundaries, which is a haven for hippos, crocodiles, and waterbirds. Other animals that you can see on a game drive in Lake Mburo National Park include zebras, elands, topis, bushbucks, duikers, and jackals. The park also offers other activities, such as horseback riding, mountain biking, and cultural tours.

Game drives in Uganda are a fascinating and exciting way to explore the wildlife and nature of this amazing country. They are also a safe and comfortable way to enjoy the wilderness, as you will be accompanied by a professional and knowledgeable guide, who will ensure that you have the best possible experience. Game drives are usually done in the early morning or late afternoon, when the animals are most active and the light is most favorable for photography. You will need a good camera, binoculars, sunscreen, hat, sunglasses, and insect repellent to make the most of your game drive. You will also need a sense of adventure, curiosity, and respect for the animals and their environment.

Game drives in Uganda are a must-do activity for anyone who loves wildlife and nature. They are a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see some of the most amazing and iconic animals in the world, in their natural habitat. They are also a chance to learn more about the ecology, history, and culture of Uganda, and to appreciate its beauty and diversity. Game drives in Uganda are a safari adventure that you will never forget

A good time to go on a game drive in any of Uganda’s  four Savanah Parks is in the morning hours, when there are high chances of seeing elephants, buffaloes, lions, and a variety of antelopes and other wildlife. Another good time is during the dry season, in the months of June to September and December to February when the vegetation is less dense and the animals are easier to spot. However, game drives can be enjoyed throughout the year, as each season offers different advantages and challenges. For example, the wet season, in the months of March to May and October to November, may have more mosquitoes and muddy roads, but it also has more lush scenery, fewer tourists, and lower prices. Ultimately, the best time to go on a game drive in Uganda depends on your personal preferences, budget, and availability.
